INCREASE IN PARK/RESERVE ENTRY FEES

Will increasing park entry fees as is envisaged in 2014 attract or repel tourists to Kenya??
The Tanzanians have low entry rates yet with high transport and accommodation costs yet they experience an influx of tourists. What are your views??

The Kenyan government has recently raised VAT fees on many items that went into effect, believe Aug or Sep '13 (smack in the middle of the season, where if possible some outfitters ate the extra) and definitely will be as 1st Jan '14 (and nobody is eating for '14). Outfitters were given only 5/days notice and though great protest, to no avail. Needless to say everyone had to redo their rate schedules. Now, there is talk about some of the KWS parks (not all parks fall under KWS) to increase their fees (maybe $10/day), but not sure effective as to 'when.' Believe it's sometime during '14.

The Tanzanian government also had a list of increases due as 1st June '13 (start of their season, also with about 1/wks notice) with great protest from the outfitters and though some fees were postponed, they won't be for long... expect increases sometime during '14.

Views - well, when was the last time you heard/saw prices for anything go down? Besides petrol, which price is manipulated. As a kid, my mom paid 25-cents for 4/pk English Muffins... today the price is close to $2; or when a 7/oz can of tuna cost 25-cents, now close to $2 and contents is barely 5/oz (unless you buy Costco's own brand that contains 7/oz).

Guess you pay or select another destination.

US congress just passed a bill to reverse the sequestrations and most of the revenue will come from an increase in Airline ticket.
'There was just a little notice to travelers and it's smack in the middle of traveling season' (to borrow Sandi's words) and 'little protest from airlines, politicians or the travelers'.
'Guess you pay or select another mode of transport.'
