I'm back-a great trip with a horrible ending

Hello all,
Well, we are back from our adventure in Kenya. We saw so many amazing things, met so many facinating people, and stayed in the most wondorous places. However, everything was overshadowed by the event that occurred our last day. We were at Richard's Camp, when a member of the group there was killed by an elephant. I am still trying to wrap my mind around this, as are all of us who were there. In some ways I would like to write about every detail of that day...in other ways, this tradgedy is so intensely personal, that I want to keep many details to myself. I will sort everyting out in my mind and hopefully in a few days I can write about this. Paddy was an incredible man, and it is a great loss. We, my husband and I, are trying to also think of the great parts of our trip, which was everything up until that awful day.
Thanks for all your help and suggestions about our trip...you all were great.
Cindy from California

I'm so very sorry you were there. Such a tragedy. My heart goes out to all of you, especially his wife and family.

I'm sure the event of the last day dominates everything else but hopefully you'll feel like sharing the rest of your trip with us.

Cindy:

Welcome back. Sorry about the horrible end of your trip.

Please note there is another thread where we have been discussing this tragedy. If you ever do feel like sharing additional details so we can learn from this it would be very much appreciated. However, it is entirely up to you and if you do not want to discuss further that will be very much understood.

The following is the link to the thread:

Welcome home Cindy. This is really a heartbreaking event, I feel bad for everyone involved.

I am so looking forward to the day you can share the happy memories with us, especially the orphanage. Our LA GTG is still on Oct 14th. I would love to meet you if you are up to it.

Guenmai Oct 4th, 2006 07:00 AM

Where is the L.A. GTG going to be? Is it only for the Africa forum group? There was interest on the Asia forum for a GTG and I was thinking of possibly having one, but if one is already set up then maybe you should also post in the Asia forum Happy Travels!

Welcome back, Cindy. I'd been thinking about what a horrible ending this would be to your trip since hearing of the incident. Such a sad and tragic event for everyone.

Guenmai Oct 4th, 2006 07:02 AM

Sorry...I just saw the thread for the L.A. GTG after I posted the above. Happy Travels!

Karibu nyumbani Cindy. I’m glad you had an amazing trip up until the tragic event and I’m very sad for everyone involved, especially Paddy’s wife.

What a roller coaster of emotions you must have experienced and probably still are. Welcome home.

Welcome home Cindy.
I logged in, saw this thread title and cringed because I knew exactly what it was going to be. :(

My heart is heavy with sadness...

Hang in there Cindy! Thoughts are with you and all others that share in your grief.

If I may: Write a letter by hand recounting what you saw & detailing how you feel. You don't need to send it, but I do know that when tradgedy strikes, that in my experience, writing down as much as I can/could was most cathartic indeed.

Cindy, welcome back. I'm very sad about all this, especially for Paddy's wife. I do hope that you and your husband are able to remember the good parts of your trip as well. Take care.

Gardyloo Oct 4th, 2006 09:38 AM

Our thoughts are with you and with Paddy's family. Such a sad outcome; I hope time will mute the pain and allow you to savor the good memories.

Welcome back Cindy.
I'm so sorry to hear about your horrible experience. I hope, with time, you will be able to concentrate more on your positive experiences rather than the bad.
