Leanna, it looks like I caused some trouble by suggesting you add Isreal.

From what I've read you need to go to Isreal last, some countries will not allow anybody who has been to Isreal to entry. Lebanon and Syria have this rule. Jordan does not restrict traveller who have been to Isreal and borders between Jordan and Isreal are not closed like in the case of Lebanon and Isreal. Even if you get Isreal to stamp a separate piece of paper; you cannot have any proof of going to Isreal, or a Jordan entry/exit stamp at the Isreali border in your passport to enter Lebanon or Syria. It is best if you make Isreal your last stop. Not sure which other countries won't let you enter if you've been to Isreal, but since your passport is still valid until 2013, I'd check to make sure that the countries you plan on visiting in the next few years will not have any sort of restrictions to travellers who have been to Isreal. Really, it's a personal choice, I only suggested Isreal since you are going to the neighbouring countries and will be in that part of the world.

I have not been to any of the countries you plan on visiting except Turkey, and from what I have read short haul flights are rather costly. Check short haul flight prices before you commit to anything else.

Also, be careful about visas in some cases you may need a multiple entry visa. More importantly, some visas are good for a certain time frame after they are issued. Therefore, you need to be certain that the visa will be valid when you need to enter a certain country. I could be wrong and maybe things have changed, but I remember the Syrian visa was good for 3 months from the date of issue. Therefore, I had to have the visa issued less than 3 months from my intended date of entry to Syria.

thit_cho, thank your for your answer.

thursdaysd -
Did you happen to see Conde Nast Traveler magazine this month (9/09)? Good article on Jordan; new ecolodges; interesting stuff way off the beaten path.

Oh good. The hiking sounds incredible. Sad to read about the water situation and possibly altering the Dead Sea's composition.

Yes, I've been saying for some time that water would be the oil of this century. Now it looks like on the one hand we'll have a shortage of the fresh variety, and on the other, too much of the salt!

Yes, we've really mucked up this planet. Happy to not be around in the next 100 years or so. Hopefully reincarnation is not the deal...

Your trip sounds great. It is on my list of place to see. I am also an independent older female traveller.
I would be very interested to hear how your trip went and your comments and itinerary, if you have time. I am looking at 2011 at the earliest.
Silk route, China and Mongolia also in the plans!!
Have a great trip!!

Hi shj - trip was end of last year - my Middle East TR is here: http://www.fodors.com/community/afri...iddle-east.cfm and on my blog at http://mytimetotravel.wordpress.com

Now I'm planning for Central Asia - I did the eastern end of the Silk Road (Beijing to Islamabad) back in 2001 - that TR is at http://wilhelmswords.com/asia2001/index.html
