How to tip your driver & guide

I was wondering if you have a driver and guide, when should you tip them? Perhaps a snippit of baksheesh early on in the journey with more to follow, so they know what awaits should they do a fabulous job? Thanks.

No need for baksheesh beforehand to the guide/driver. You hand over gratuity at conclusion of the service.

Does it depend on what country we are talking about? Or is when to tip pretty much a universal custom?

T.I.P.S = <i><b>to insure prompt service</i></b>. Example: giving a maitre'd to get a good table.

What we are mostly talking about is a <i><b>"gratuity"</i></b>.... given at the conclusion of a service.

Though the words are often used interchangeably.

Not to be pedantic, here's some info about the word tips: http://www.snopes.com/language/acronyms/tip.asp But to answer the question, giving it at the end has been the custom in any place that I've been...except those places (like China) where one doesn't tip at all.

Amy - interesting!

Conde Nast Travel Magazine recently had small booklet inserts (removable) regarding subjects on dressing and tipping around the world. Useful information - when, how much, if you should (ie, China). Maybe you can find these.
