How far ?
We will be travelling from Western Serengeti to Ngorongoro can anybody tell me how far or roughly how long this will take, I understand it's quite a long way. Is it a very interesting drive or do we need some distraction? Also we are going June the 10th-27th how warm will it be in the daytime?

5 hours at least from Grumeti Camp to Crater Lodge.
June is nice and warm during the day with occasional thunderstorms and comfortably cool at night. |
keah05, we did the reverse drive....Ngorongoro to Kirawira last year. Although it was a long day, I just loved the drive. There was lots to see and we had opportunity to get out and stretch at Oldupai Gorge, Shifting Sands, Naabi Hill gate, and Simba Kopjes for lunch. We also had a fabulous Maasai guide who was not only knowledgable, but full of wonderful stories about growing up in a boma, alongside the wildlife in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. We were never in need of a distraction.
We were on safari from June 29-July 10 and the weather was glorious...warm but not hot during the daytime and cool but not cold at night. The coolest was on the crater rim early in the morning, and that was the only time I wore long sleeves during the entire trip. |
Thank you both for your reply's. Calo did you by any chance go with Roy's & have Claimen as your guide

<i>Is it a very interesting drive or do we need some distraction? </i> Cannot think of a more exciting road on planet earth (though in the last few months i passed through 2 famous beautiful roads - 'Icefields Parkway' & 'Carretera Austral') you are driving Through Serengeti & NCA ... aby PS take it easy; forget you have read that figure of 5 hours ... |
The five hours assumes no major delays and if there are groups stopped to view game, animals in the road, etc., you can easily spend a lot more time. Section near the crater was quite rough when we were there last year.

In many cases, how long your drive takes actually depends on something completely different - park entry fees! If you entered the Serengeti at say 11am on day 1, you pay $50 pp for every 24 hours. This means you have to be out of the park by 11am on the last day or pay another $50pp! The cheaper safari outfitters WILL drive like maniacs (forget speed limits) to have you at Naabi by 11am because they will NOT pay the extra money! There won't be game viewing along the way! Please ask your outfitter about this and then you will know! |
Yeah! good point by Eben

Yes, I went with Roy last year and Clamian was my guide. Did you read my trip report?
Interesting that <b>"The cheaper safari outfitters WILL drive like maniacs (forget speed limits) to have you at Naabi by 11am because they will NOT pay the extra money" </b>, Eben! I see in her new post that Keah05 is planning to book with Roy, so this won't be an issue....no I do not work for Roy or have any affiliation. |
