Hotels or Riads?

Two couples are planning a trip in fall and most of our lodging options are larger hotels. The riads look more authentic, charming but my husband wants to be near the medinas or center of activity, so this is his main concern. Any suggestions on riads or good hotel experiences? We will be covering Rabat, Fez, Marakech, Ouarzazate, Essaouira during our trip.

We took a tour last summer of these Moroccan cities staying in Fez and Marrakesh. While in Fez we stayed at the Spendid and in Marrakesh at the Kenza Hotels. Both were OK - not Holiday Inn standards (broken heaters, small rooms, etc) but liveable. Remember standards in this country are very different than the US. Our hotels in the Sahara area were even worse as far as cleanliness. But, this trip was FABULOUS!! I'd return to this country in a moment!
