Honeymoon
Hi Fodorites,
My daughter and fiance are planning a three week honeymoon over the last 2 weeks of december and first week of January next year. They are considering South Africa (game parks and Cape Town including the winelands. Then they are thinking about going to Mozambique to relax on the beach or possibly Mauritius. What do you think of the idea, considering the weather? I have traveled around the area, but at the end of September? Does anyone know what the weather was like over this period this past Christmas? Thanks, Bonnie |

Nice time to go around Xmas warmer low rain/humidity... www.zicasso.com www.luxurylink.com 2 good planning sites Congrats! |
Great idea for a honeymoon :-)
The timing is perfect for the Cape (summertime) as well as Moz (idem, if you stay long enough that is; showers never last longer than a day or so). However, it's right in the middle of the rainy season in Kruger. Ergo, your daughter is not going to have the best game viewing. That's true. But prices will be lower, and if she picks a good lodge with a good guide, she still might have the trip of a lifetime. Perhaps throw in a few western parks to be safe? Like Addo? B.regs, J. |
thanks so much. I am afraid they will pay high season rates in kruger area over xmas with game viewing that is not the best.
Is addo in a different area that would have less rain? Do you know what Cape Town weather would be like over Xmas? Bonnie |
I was in the Kruger region for about 4 days over Christmas several years ago. Although it can be rainy in Dec/Jan, I experienced none. However, the place was Tarzan-hot, with the temp hitting 107 F on the day I left. In that heat wildlife plops under a tree or bush and doesn't move---not great for game viewing. Steve

Out trip to Kruger had been early December and experienced some overnight showers, but one-day the most amazing afternoon thunderstorm, which once past cleared to beautiful blue skies.
However, as sdb2, the daytime temps were in the hi-90s and the a/c in our room was welcomed, as was the plunge pool. Yet, by the time we went out on the afternoon game drive, the temps were quite comfy and once the sun set, it actually got cold/windy in those open vehicles. But sitting at dinner (open air), it was delightful, certainly not hot, rather a bit warm/sticky. As to game whether out in the cool mornings or later afternoon... there was plenty, but I can imagine if we were out mid-day, from 12N-3pm, rather than from 4pm onward... the animals would be taking their siesta, and why not! Just things to be aware. |
thanks so much!

Cape Town will be warm in December & January & it's high season.

It is the best time of year for CT and is high season, not the best time of year for game viewing, though. Addo is in the Eastern Cape so also gets very hot and dry at this time of year, but as mentioned if you go on game drives in the early morning and late evening then you will see game going to watering holes etc. This is when the game rangers expertise is welcomed. Dnt rule out Kwazulu Natal, also beautiful area with loads of game and hot and humid at this time of year.
