Holidays in Israel

I will be in Israel next April. Memorial Day and Independence Day are April 21 (evening) through April 23rd. I will probably be up north for the first two days and in Jerusalem on the 23rd. Are historic sights, museums, etc. closed on those days? Will any other places be closed? How are those holidays celebrated in Israel?

Thanks for any information that you can provide.

Memorial Day is a regular working day in Israel and most tourist sites will be open. Places of entertainment will be closed. Restaurants are closed in the evening and open up gradually during the day. There are two "moments of silence" that begin with sirens heard throughout the country - at 8 PM and 11 AM.

Independence Day starts immediately at sundown upon the end of Memorial Day. Every city and town has variety shows and dancing in the main squares, usually accompanied by fireworks. Everybody is out in the streets. The next day is one where family picnics and barbecues are traditional - all parks where barbecues are permitted will be packed. All the tourist sites are open as well as many that are open to the public only on this day - army bases, factories, utilities, etc. Traffic will be heavy and there is public transportation.

It is a unique time to be in Israel and you will have plenty to do and see.
