Historical sights in Ethiopia

My daughter has sponsored 2 World Vision kids in Ethiopia for many years, and we want to go there and see if we can meet them. We actually have a place to stay in Addis, but everything seems so far away once you've seen the market and museum in Addis. I know there are internal historic flights. What is the best way to book them? Before or after you get there? Do they do tacky things like weigh you before they decide the cost of your ticket( I had to ask, who else but a Fodorite?) Do people usually spend the night in Lalibella or Gorgon and continue in the circuit the next day?

Can anyone help?

Dear twoteachers,

I really don't know what "the circuit" is but am posting just to say that Lalibela is such an amazing place I can't see how you could possibly fly, see it, and fly out same day. Just my opinion - but there are many sites. And it's not just about the churches - it's about being there. It's also at 2,800m so I got quite tired tramping around (though maybe that's just me - and I wasn't 100% at the time!!).

I'd want to stay the night.

Sorry, forgot to say something quite important. Have a fabulous time!! And do tell your story - especially about how the sponsored children are - when you get back.

All the best.

thanks for the reply. I am forewarned about the altitude issue, though a little intimidated, as I am not in the best shape and 60. I've been walking at home, but it sounds like it is not nearly enough. I just understood there was a loop of historical sights in Ethiopia-Lalibella, Gorgon, Blue Nile. EAch was so far from Addis, that it seemed you had to travel from one to the other and use the internal air flights because of distance.

Also, we know that Addis has one of the best markets in the world and have been told that Saturday is the prime day. We are continuing from Addis to Kenya, and we need to know if it is worth it to delay our departure until Sunday or better to have more time in Kenya? As of now, we have 8 days scheduled for Ethiopia and only 7 for Kenya.

This is all very new to us and I suspect we are trying to do too much on one trip, for fear of never having another. We know someone who owns a good hotel in Addis, so we need to balance the temptation of a place to stay with the other locations in Ethiopia and Kenya where we have to eke the lodging out of a limited budget. Thanks for any help.

I will have to check maps and memories to be of further use as I travelled thru Ethiopia totally by road, and it was 10 years ago. I do not remember a place called Gorgon , for instance. Gondar perhaps?

What are u planning for Kenya? What do you feel you must do? hard to tell if you are trying to cram too much in without knowing that.

luv.

Yes, Gondar. In Kenya we are planning to find a third child in Kabernet and going on a safari in the Mara.
