I don't know about the bus but the (sitting) train was awful, I can only imagine how bad a bus ride would be. If flying isn't an option I've heard the sleeper train is OK.
I'm anxious to hear Casual Cairo's views on the bus.

Glad to say I travelled from Cairo to Aswan and the bus was not that bad! Of course.. cleanliness and space between seats were not enough. But the bus was modern and comfortable. I was lucky because the seat next to me was empty, so I could have more space for me.
The tour lasted 14hs aprox. It left on time but it took 3 hours before leaving Cairo.
A/C was ok but I was glad to have taken my blancket with me before.
I came back in the seating train, but I think the bus is so much better..
