I don't know about the bus but the (sitting) train was awful, I can only imagine how bad a bus ride would be. If flying isn't an option I've heard the sleeper train is OK.

I'm anxious to hear Casual Cairo's views on the bus.

All of the above plus the bathroom was completely disgusting.

If you click my name you will find my trip report. There is a paragraph or two about the train.

BTW, I was in first class. I can only imagine how bad second or third would be.

Glad to say I travelled from Cairo to Aswan and the bus was not that bad! Of course.. cleanliness and space between seats were not enough. But the bus was modern and comfortable. I was lucky because the seat next to me was empty, so I could have more space for me.
The tour lasted 14hs aprox. It left on time but it took 3 hours before leaving Cairo.
A/C was ok but I was glad to have taken my blancket with me before.
I came back in the seating train, but I think the bus is so much better..
