HEEEEEEEEEELLLPPPP TRAVELERS CHEQUES IN TURKEEEEEYYY ??????

Message: I am planning to go to Turkey with a friend of mine in late June. We want to stay 1 week in Istanbul, and 3 weeks in
the Aegean Region. We don't want to carry a lot of cash with us, so we were planning to use travelers cheques..However, I
heard that travelers cheques are hard to use, or cash since a lot of places will not accept them..is this true? What are your
recommendations..thank you

We had no problems cashing American Express travelers checks in Istanbul banks. However, the farther away one gets from Istanbul, the more likelihood of problems. Ankara,Izmir, Bursa -- few problems with checks. VISA and Master Card accepted widely. Getting a cash advance on my VISA card was a big hassle in one bank, but no problem at another.Be sure to have your passport with you whenever you want to cash a traveler's check. We did not have enough courage to use an ATM for fear that it would swallow our card -- but ATMs are to be seen in many places.

Try to stay with cash or credit cards. If you travel to Bodrum you should be able to cash travellers cheques in the main city of Bodrum, but don't try your luck outside of major tourist cities. Please also note: none of your bills (cash) can have any rips - we had some money refused because of this. Try to carry some cash as the technology is not great there and you will find a few places take credit cards, but the machine cannot 'read' or accept your card - and the people are often just not experienced enough to try and get it to work. With cahs - exchange a little bit every 4-5 days as the exchage rate may change while you are there (inflation is running at 80-90%25 right now). GOOD LUCK!!!
