Health Volunteer Opportunities in Africa or other developing countries
 

Hello.<BR><BR>Does anybody know of any health volunteer part-time opportunities in developing countries such as Africa, India, Pakistan, etc? I'm an occupational therapist and would like to visit a developing country for a few weeks and do some sort of volunttering. Please advise.<BR><BR>Cheers.

Try Earthwatch. They have all types of trips. Some relate to health matters. You should be able to find them on the internet. I think they are located in Maine. I went with them on a trip to Africa on an elephant study. I saw they also had health concern studies in their magazine though. There are probably other types of groups but this is all I could find at the time. Good luck.

they offer programs to tanzania and ghana in africa, and also to India, and some other latin american countries as well.

The only problem with Earthwatch is that they charge a fee for programs...and their programs are not oriented to health professionals.

Since you are an occupational therapist, I'd do a google search to see if you can come up with some projects in these countries that need and will take direct volunteers. And as an occupational therapist, you might want to concentrate on areas where people have lost limbs to war (Rwanda), landmines (Mozambique and Angola).

Also , Doctors Without Borders only takes long-term volunteers for emergency work...but they might be able to steer you to an organization that takes shorter term volunteers.
