Having trouble choosing hotel in Dubai

I am going to Dubai in October to meet up with my husband who will have just finished climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. We are having trouble choosing a hotel as there seem to be so many fantastic resorts but we prefer understated luxury with good service rather than over the top luxury which some of the resorts seem to offer. Hubby will be looking for a really comfortable bed and I will be looking for a great pool/s.

We have narrowed it down to The Royal Mirage Palace or Residence and Spa and the Mina A Salam. Has anyone stayed in any of these and could I have your comments?

Thanks in advance

Dear FranT,
Dubai is one of my favorite places to visit (Traveled there over 30 times). The weather is going to be a lot more tolerant then the sweltering heat in July/Aug. If I were you, I would stay at the Royal Mirage Palace or Jumeriah Beach Resort Hotel in Jumeriah. They both have great restaurants, night club, and swimming pools. Just keep in mind depending on traffic a taxi or hotel shuttle will take 20-30 minutes away from all the shopping centers/airport.

While I've stayed in neither , I've dined in both. As a resident of Dubai (2 years), I don't think you'll be disappointed in either of the hotels you've mentioned. The Mina A'Salam is the newest of the two , but both reflect a flair for Arabic culture. If you enjoy shisha by the gulf , the Royal Mirage is hard to beat.

Thanks everyone for your help. After much deliberation have elected to stay at the Royal Mirage Arabian Court and have decided to splash out on a couple of nights at the Al Maha. Can't wait!

If you would appreciate a more authentic Arabian atmosphere, with lots of wood decoration and Arabian copperware, etc, do not hesitate: take Mina al Salam. Also ask how far they are with their further hotel extensions nextdoors. Royal Mirage is very nice too, but has less of a local flavour to it.
