We did not see chimps when were in Kenya or Tanzania, but you may want to look into going to the Mahale Mountains National Park, which is in western Tanzania. It is home to over 1,000 chimps and other species of primates. The best play to stay is Greystoke Tented Camp. The only way to reach the park is by air. We looked into going, but opted to spend time in Selous instead.

One of the best places to see them is Kibale forest in Uganda. Stay at Ndali lodge which is magnificent. It is easy to get to Kibale and would be much, much cheaper than Mahala mts on the edge of Lake Tanganyika. The other advantage of Kibale is that you can combine the trip with a gorilla track in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and visits to Ruwenzoris and Queen Elizabeth National park.

In Tanzania - Gombe Stream National where Jane Godall was based is probably one of the best places in Tanzania to see chimps but getting to the park is a problem and the accommodation extremely basic( more suitable to back-packers than luxury travellers ).

I suggest you stick to Kibale and stay at Ndali for at least 3 nts and do 2 full-day tracks into the forest.
