Gunment attack Kruger park camp

Skukuza - Four gunmen held up visitors in the Kruger National Park (KNP) in the early hours of Saturday morning.

They overpowered a security guard to gain entry to a privately managed camp in the Mulawati concession area at about 01:00, said spokesperson for South African National Parks (SANParks) Wanda Mkutshulwa on Tuesday.

"It is believed that two of the robbers forcefully entered a unit...and removed certain personal items of the guests," she said.

No one was injured in the attack and the guard was able to alert a nearby lodge that called the Kruger's section rangers for help.

When daylight broke, the rangers, members of SANParks Corporate Investigation Service and police followed the suspects' tracks to a village almost 30km away.

By Tuesday, they hadn't been arrested yet.

SANParks chief executive, David Mabunda, assured that park investigators were working with the police to apprehend the suspects.

Managing director of the Three Cities Hospitality Group, which operates the camp in the Mulawati concession area, Alan Vels, stressed that the incident was the first since the camp opened three years ago.

"We will work closely with SANParks and the police to ensure that this type of incident does not occur again, and continue to offer the level of hospitality these private camps have become renowned for," Vels said.

Skukuza police station spokesperson, Oubaas Coetzer, is the only officer allowed to comment on the case, but he could not be reached for comment.

His wife, who also works with him at the police station, Sarlette Coetzer, said he was in Pretoria and had instructed her not to give his cellphone number to anyone including the media.
