SA-looking for small luxury accommodation
Hello everyone. Looking for recommendations for small, romantic, cozy, quiet, (luxury) accommodation in/around Cape Town and Johannesburg. Price not an issue.

Any of the SA hotels in the Small Leading Hotels group are excellent (www.slh.com). Personally, I think the Saxon is a bit ostentatious and characterless - but that's just a question of personal taste. Other Jhb options are:
The Westcliff
Ten Bompass
The Grace
Quartermain
In Cape Town my favourite hotel is the Victoria & Alfred Hotel - it's on the waterfront which is convenient, and has something really special about it. The mountain view rooms are lovely. To me it has the advantages of the Cape Grace, but at a fraction of the size. Other places which get rave reviews are:
Table Bay
Mount Nelson
12 Apostles (although resident expert Selwyn has a strong opinion about this!)

Somebody else mentioned Saxon being a bit ostentatious (though some of the photographs on the website look v nice..)

aarti, Traci is a local and is up on the current choices so she can give you far more info on Cape Town than I can (we stayed at the Cape Grace and loved it but it's not as small as you'd like). Traci, one of our tour guides gave high praise to the Ellerman House, which has 11 rooms and has 5 stars, awards, etc. I believe the Earl of Spencer stays there. The downside would be that you'd have to use their driver to get anywhere as it's not located on the water. Just wondering what you thought of that. And, not for Aarti, but how is the new hotel that was finished this year? The one where they planned to have boats that take you to the water?

Well everyone has their own preference as to what they feel is the best romantic cosy spot in Cape Town and so do I. Firstly I dont regard hotels as cosy or romatic so dont expect to hear about a hotel recommendation from me. As far as guesthouses are concerned a place like Ellerman house is fabulous yet not romantic. This would then bring me to Camps Bay Terrace in Camps Bay.

This is a marvellous venue which I would recommend highly. The sea views are spectacular to say the very least (100 Meters away from the sea) The penthouse (the room I recommend) is large and as price does not matter I suggest that you book both bedrooms in the Penthouse so as to ensure privacy. It is slap bang on the sea and has an awesome, huge private patio that overlooks the sea with your own private pool. (Recently aded on to the patio) On the balconies you will have total freedom and privacy where you can have sundowners etc to your hearts content. Furthermore Gila and Chris Marshall are wonderful hosts and very discreet in their mannerisms.
Camps Bay Terrace is next to Camps Bay Beach and is within walking distance to all the good restarants and amenities in Camps Bay. Furthermore you would be 15 minutes away from the city or Waterfront by car.
So there you have it another romantic hideaway
)

The Spier Village is a pretty average setup. The venue is far from most places and one tends to be trapped on the Spier farm when staying there. The area truly is a magnificent one scenic wise however it also is VERY VERY commercialised.
The Spier Village is modelled in building style on an area of Cape Town's past called District 6. Because of what District 6 represents to me and most Capetonians, this concept turns me off the venue automatically as it is a very hurtful part of our history in Cape Town. I really feel that more of a tribute to District 6 could be played out other than mock copying the style into a commercial hotel.
When at Spier there are a couple of reasonable restaurants on the farmstead that one can visit and there are quite a couple of good eateries in the nearby surrounding area too. Stellenbosch is about 10 minutes away by car so it is quite close too. Amongst others if you want to play golf, the hotel has recently developed a golf course which is quite good according to some reliable reports that I have had. There also is a communnal pool as well as tennis court. Horseriding can also be done on the farm.
All in all I suppose the accommodation at Spier could be termed as being reasonable (Certainly NOT exceptional) but please dont believe that it could be labelled as romantic or cosy because that imho it DEFINITELY is not.
With the latter being said I dont really think that Spier will fit your bill.

Selwyn, I checked the Camps Bay web page and it looks wonderful. But can you suggest another well located upscale guesthouse in Cape Town for those of us without an unlimited "price is no issue" budget?

Unfortunately there is no free lunch in this world and the possibility of finding an upmarket guesthouse anywhere in Cape Town at a low- medium price is a non entity. With that said if you post a mail on Fodors giving me an idea of your accommodation budget I will make suggestions to you within this constraint.

Can I expect fairly nice accommodations in a good location in Cape Town for $200.00 to $250.00 CAD per night per room? And would I be asking too much for a nice view too?
I don't require small, cozy and romantic, but I do like luxury where possible. I do hope I am not embarrassing myself by being entirely unrealistic.

Just stayed for the third time at Tarragona Lodge in Hout Bay: wouldn't think of staying anywhere else in CT though have tried others. Go to http://www.tarragona.co.za/

Just stayed at the Atlanticview in Camps Bay. It was beautiful and cozy. The breakfasts were great and the evening wine and hors d'oeuvres service was a really nice bonus. I definitely recommend it! www.atlanticviewcapetown.com

Sorry to be asking questions all the time but I definitee needto know when you are travelling. In terms of upscale at the prices you can afford all I can tell you is that in the season you will only make a lowish mid scale with what you can afford hence I need to know when you are traveling?
