great white shark cage adventure
Has anyone done the snorkel/snuba shark cage adventure? We realize it takes place in S. Africa. We would love to add this to our African vacation in Kenya/Tanzania, but would love to hear opinions.

Please do a search in this forum ~~ there are lots of posts about it (primarily positive) :-)

There are plenty of threads on this subject, but if on vacation in East Africa and plan to go to South Africa for this activity, please plan to spend enough time in/around Capetown to make it worthwhile.
The flight time is easily 4-hrs to Johannesburg, then 2-hrs to CPT. |
Dankat, I highly recommend Cape Town and the great white shark dive in Gansbaai. However, as has been mentioned, it's a bit of a stretch from East Africa. If you want to do a 'surf and turf' safari, I would instead recommend that you fly to Mozambique and do a whale shark dive or go to Zanzibar for some snorkelling. South Africa is (at least one) a trip of its own.

Sandi's comment about allowing enough time to see the area is exactly why I decided against the shark excursion on an upcoming trip.
I felt it would be a shame to go all that way (plus the expense) for just a couple shark trips. So I'll wait until I can devote at least 4-5 days to the Cape Town area. The other big draw for me was the Jackass Penguins. Some things I learned in my shark research were: Some of the best views were on deck, not in the cage. June-July are the peak months for great white sharks. Don't plan on only one trip. Conditions could be less than desirable or could cancel the trip all together. So at least two is best. This would be especially true if you are going all the way to Cape Town solely for sharks. Please post what you learn, especially info from particular operators. If you cannot find those great white shark links, I have the info they contain and they were quite helpful. Feel free to email me. |
We did the trip in Feb - we knew that we would probablt not see a lot of sharks as not season. Just before we pulled up anchor (3 hours) some sharks came in - we did not get into the cage saw them up really close for about half an hour. Pretty amazing but we were staying down at Hermanus - not sure if I would fly 3 hours for them
