Gorillas and.... what else?

Thinking of my third trip to Africa. Been to Tanzania and Botswana, and seriously considering visiting mountain gorillas.... love to hear whether Fodorites think Rwanda or Uganda preferable?? And what else would be good to combine with this trip? Maybe Kenya....? Southern Tanzania (been on the northern circuit)? Something else? Looking for a 12-14 day trip in total.

Rwanda or Uganda? Either or both. But with 12-14 days, I wouldn't recommend both PLUS Kenya or Tanzania.

If you are just visiting the gorillas and then spending the rest of the time in Kenya or Tanzania, I'd suggest Rwanda because it is easy logistically and the gorilla viewing is a little better than Uganda.

If you plan on spending more time in Rwanda or Uganda, then either offers lots more than gorillas. You can see chimps, other primates, lots of birds, plains animals, and do wildlife river cruises in Uganda. I've done two trips that were Uganda and Rwanda only. Plenty to see in just those two locations and lots more I didn't get to.

You also have to decide how many gorilla visits. If possible, I'd recommend two. Even three or four will provide different gorilla groups or certainly different gorilla activities.

The Mara in Kenya combines nicely with gorillas. Add Samburu or Lewa Downs for a great itinerary. I had gorillas, Lewa, Mara for an itinerary one time. Nice mix.

Others have gone to S. Tanz outside the dry season and enjoyed it. I never went at that time of year and in fact I made sure it was dry season for my trip. So if you're going June-Oct, I'll suggest including S. Tanz. If you want more primates, consider Mahale in S. Tanz, the granddaddy of chimp locales. In Sept I did Flycatcher's itinerary and stayed at their camps in Mahale and Katavi, both in S. Tanz. Fantastic! They also have a camp in Ruaha, in S. Tanz.

If you think there may be a 4th, 5th, or many more trips to Africa, then I'd do gorillas, Lewa or Samburu, Mara for a nice 12-14 day safari. Whatever time of year you might be going these are good Kenya options. And I'd do Southern Tanzania in its own trip in the future.

With lots of time and money, I think for a next-next trip I'd choose Rwanda and Uganda, gorilla trekking in both countries plus other parks. I'd use Lynn's 12 treks trip as a guide.

But with limited time and limited funds, I went to Rwanda, did two gorilla treks, a golden monkey trek, spent a night at Lake Kivu, visited the genocide memorial in Kigali, flew back to Kenya and then went to Tsavo and the Mara. It was a fast-paced but thoroughly mind-blowing, unforgettable trip.
