Make that Rwanda, not Uganda! Sorry... It's World Water Day, so there are several articles about this and efforts for humans/beasts to co-exist.

They changed the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund to the Gorilla Organization? Why?

I would think continued use of her name helps to bring more funds.

I really enjoyed those videos, and now I'm anticipating our trip more than ever. Sadly, we won't be in Rwanda until January 2007!
Another funny thing is the seemingly ubiquitous presence of Francois Bigirimana in specials about Rwanda's gorillas. He was featured in a recent Discovery HD special on gorilla trekking, and he gets mentioned a lot on the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project web site (www.mgvp.org). Now I am starting to regard him as something of a celebrity and hope to meet him when we get there in January!

OK, I heartily recommend everyone go to the site, reading the article and view the little one minutes videos.

It gives a great view of Rwanda and the gorillas. I also learned the name of the great silverback of the Sabinyos is Guhonda.

I've got his picture on the wall in my office.

In a nutshell:
The Gorilla Organization (formerly The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund) based in the UK is an entirely seperate entity/foundation and for legal reasons, had to change their name so not to be confused with DFGFI.

While in Rwanda w/ the DFGFI staff, I got a chance to do a trek w/ Francois.
Be prepared. He samples almost all the vegetation en route to the gorillas and of course, tries to entice all who are with him to indulge.
I also got a chance to spend time with two of the vets w/ MGVP. They are really great people.

Divewop -- we had similar invitations to sample vegetation when we were in the Amazon in Peru in 2004. We usually went along with it, so I am sure we will do so again if we do a trek with Francois and he extends the invitation!

I seem to recall from some previous posts that you live in Atlanta, right?

Yep-haved lived here for six years but am seriously considering moving w/in the next year. "To where?" is the question I'm pondering but suffice it to say, I'd like more of an 'outdoorsy' town.

I declined most of Francois' invitations to sample the vegetation since I'd done taste-testing on a previous trip but it's always fun to watch others engage. ;-)
