Gorilla trek company Uganda? Budget vs. mid-range accommodations?
 

My husband and I are planning on going on a 5 day gorilla trek in Uganda (leaving from Kampala and going to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest) in November. This will be a belated one year wedding anniversary celebration. Does anyone have recommendations on which company to go with? Also, is there a huge difference between budget accommodations and mid-range accommodations?

I went with Africa Pearl Safaris. The tour organizer, Edris Kamoga, is very conscientious and will work hard for you.

I stayed in Bwindi Forst at Buhoma Lodge, and cannot recommend it highly enough! Perfect place for its forest setting, great people, and wonderful food. Not sure about budget vs midrange, but in that area, nothing decent is inexpensive.

WHERE are you doing the gorilla trek ? Do you have your tickets already? The tour company you choose can get them for you. When i went ot Uganda last year, the ticets were $500 per person in peak season.

Another part of Bwindi forest is at Nkuringo. If you trek from there, DO stay at Nkuringo Gorilla Camp. The two cottages there are wonderful, as are the owners. Asagario is amazing, and he has put so much loving effort into improving his local village.

Agree with CaliNurse that the tripadvisor forum has good info so check there also (sorry fodors!). We used Churchill Safaris in Uganda this past winter and had a wonderful trip, no complaints. We stayed in mostly higher-end accomodations and I loved them but we spent so little time actually at the camps/lodges that it seemed a shame and pretty much a waste of money. We were mainly out on game drives or traveling from place to place so we'd get into a camp at dinner time and leave again at sun-up. So probably mid-level accomodations are smarter. If you do have a few splurgey places mixed in make sure you'll be there enough to actually enjoy their facilities.

From personal experience I found that accommodation described as 'mid-range' in Uganda was bordering more on 'budget'. While we are not too fussy about where we stay (as Leslie S says you spend so little time there anyway) I'm glad we didn't go for the budget option.

I would highly recommend Virunga Adventure Tours (http://virungaadventuretours.com/). They are based in Kisoro town, not far from the Bwindi park. Sheba,the owner of the company is such an amazing tour guide.

I really recommend that you use Uganda Trek (ugandatrek.com) They have a very good guide Eddy and Jackie was there to help me plan my tour and sure they will give your trip a personal touch and make your anniversary that memorable. For my solo tour I had a mixture of mid-range and Luxury accommodations.
Based on my inquiry before I traveled to Uganda, I can tell you that with mid-range accommodation your guaranteed some facilities(internet,bar, restaurant plus the services is better), while Budget accommodations are really basic(bed breakfast, restaurant)
