A change from my normal gameviewing experiences!

Hi everyone,

Look here very rarely now but as I am about to go back to South Africa at the beginning of March and I did ask for assistance regarding Phinda, thought I would mention what I finally decided.

Becoming a wildlife carer here at home made me want to change what I did in South Africa, so now going to a wildlife rehabilitation centre to work for the first 3 weeks. Really looking forward to this but a bit nervous at the same time!
Then to Kapama for 2 nights just to see their rehab centre and because it is fairly close to where we are going first up.
Then down to Phinda for 9 nights staying in two camps, Forest and Mountain. Black Rhino heads my wish list for here. Was quite the nightmare to book for some bizarre reason, not sure if it was me or them, but hopefully the stay there will make that a distant memory.
This is a new adventure and one I am really looking forward to as it should also help me in general, with what I am doing here for my native wildlife.

Kind regards

Kaye

Congrats, Kaye! I stayed at Kapama Buffalo Camp in October... nice place. I didn't make it down to the wildlife rehab centre, though. It wasn't mentioned by the tour leader. If you're at Buffalo Camp (my choice among their properties), say "Hi" to Asst. Mgr. Claire from "Sharon and Martha". She'll know who we are.

Interesting Kaye. Sure you'll have great safari(s), please tell us all about it when you get back.

Working at a wildlife rehab center is on my wishlist. I've done it for the day, and that experience whet my appetite for more. I just haven't been able to bring myself to dedicate such a significant chunk of my vacation to the cause. Please let us know how it goes.

Hope you have a wonderful trip. I will be eager to hear about it. Surprised that Phinda was hard to book but I hope you enjoy it.

Hi everyone,

Thanks to all your good wishes, I am really looking forward to the wildlife rehab part - I think it will so rewarding to help those injured/orphaned animals.

Yes cw I was also very surprised, it is after all, what they do!

Will be back 7 April so shall let you know how I go. The big question now is do we (22 yr old niece Becky coming with me) need rabies shots, I am really hoping no, but my gp unfortunately thinks the travel doctor will say yes, we do need them for that length of time!

Kind regards

Kaye

Kaye, are you back and recovered from the travel enough to write about your trip? (Maybe you did already but I haven't found it). I am very interested to hear your thoughts on Phinda and Mountain vs. Forest as we are visiting there in about 8 weeks!

Well, if this discussion has moved, or is going to move, to another thread, anyone have the link for it?

cary999 it's not really moved - I had started a new thread with specific questions about the rooms at Mountain and whether we should stay in the "family rooms" which are really just 2 smaller rooms connected by a verandah. Kaye answered my specific questions on that thread which is here:
