Hello prowl,

Many people who post here are into independent travel and dislike organised tours. I would put myself in that category. But, after participating on a couple of travel forums for a while, I have learned that there are many different tastes in the world of travel, and many of them are valid.

I looked at the Globus itinerary that you mentioned and, by the standards of organised tours (whose itineraries often are a bit fast for my taste), it's quite good. Certainly it would give you an overview of South Africa. Then, if you ever wanted to go back and see any one region in more depth, you would have a basis from which to start.

Just a couple of warnings.

Cape Town has a mediterranean climate. Rain falls predominantly in the winter. So it's possible you could run into some wet weather in July. It's also possible you could have mild, sunny days. There's no telling.

(The rest of South Africa has predominantly dry winters, however.)

I noticed when I read the itinerary that some activities were offered as optional extras. I think it would be a good idea to check what is and is not included in the price of the tour and what the optional extras will cost if you avail yourself of them.

I've never been on an escorted tour, but from remarks I've heard here and there I gather Globus is a good company.

I think I've seen comments to the effect that there are travel discussion forums that focus on organised tours. Perhaps you'll find more detailed information if you locate one of those forums -- if you haven't done so already.

Hope that helps.
