Gifts for Tanzania / Kenya

I'm leaving in two days for Kenya/Tanzania - any suggestions for what to take as small gifts to locals and for trades at small booth?

Coins & small bills. The people you would be tipping need that, to buy food and necessities, more than they need gewgaws.

No, I'm not wanting to replace tips, but to give to local people as true gifts or tokens. I've had suggestions for pens, t-shirts and cosmetics but wanted other opinions.

We were just in Kenya last month, and actually, we were strongly advised against giving coins to the local population. Someone in our party brought pens, baseball hate (everyone wants baseball hats) reading materials of any kind. Bill folds, key chains, candy were all extremely appreciated.
