Getting to the Masai Mara

If I begin my September vacation to Kenya and Tanzania in the Masai Mara, is my best bet pricewise and conveniencewise to get a round trip to Nairobi and then connect on Kenya Air? We will be ending our trip on Zanzibar, and I've found excellent flights back to Nairobi from there. Thank you!

styleoracle - Go with whomever gives you the best price and schedule. Your options can be to fly in/out of NBO; or if on KLM into NBO and out of Kilimanjaro (JRO) on a split ticket.

Precision Air and Tanzania Air both fly from Zanzibar to NBO, and I'm sure both or one of these fly Zanzibar to JRO.

Of course, you'll have to check schedules and days of travel if they don't have daily flights. Also depending on when your homebound departs Africa, and whether a morning or afternoon flight is available from Zanzibar, you might have up to half a day or more to spend in either NBO or JRO.

Your cheapest bet will probably be round trip to NBO, with round trip NBO - Zanzibar.

The most convenient would be returning from DAR (Dar es Salaam, TZ) not NBO. Dar is about a 15 minute flight from Zanzibar. Both the SWISS and KLM flights travel to DAR before they head back to Europe (I am not sure what carrier you are using).

I would advise against JRO as that would be back tracking. The JRO airport is also much farther from a city than DAR, so you would be spending more time waiting in the terminal, while at DAR you can easily take a cab into town, eat a nice meal, then head back to the airport for your evening flight back to Europe.

There are also frequent ferry connections from Zanzibar to Dar. The ferrys are cheap, and a real experience.
