Getting to the Airport in Israel

My son is extending his birthright trip. He may be taking a late Fri flight back to NY. He will be in Jerusalem and I am wondering if there is public transportation on a Fri night? If not, would car services run then? Any idea of the cost and how to book a car service?

Thank you for any suggestions!

There is no public transportation on Fridays starting mid-late afternoon.
Nesher is the company that runs like a shared taxi service to from Jerusalem and the airport, not sure if they run Friday/Sat
A regular taxi would probably cost at least 200 shekels. When there is no public transport, taxis are allowed to charge more. There is also a surcharge from the airport that may apply to the airport as well.
I'll see if I can get more details from a friend

I arrived into Tel Aviv on a Friday afternoon so I had to taxi. I paid in sheckels but I think the cost translated to somewhere around $28 USD. That was 2 years ago.

My apologies, I just realized your son is going to Jerusalem not Tel Aviv. Kindly disregard my post.

According to Ben Gurion Airport's web site, a shared taxi service to/from Jerusalem is in operation as long as flights arrive or depart. Does this mean Friday evenings are included? Technically it looks to me that it does. The Hebrew version of the site gives more details than the English one. If you go to their site, navigate your way starting at "getting to & from the airport". Here is an excerpt from the English version:

Taxi Service to and from Jerusalem
Nesher Tours operates special fare taxis between Jerusalem and BGN.
Tel: (02) 625-7227

Does anyone know if El Al has an 800#?

Eli - I assume that an (02) number is dialed in Israel. Do you know how would I call from NY?

Calling El AL won't help much--you really want to hear from the taxi company itself or possibly airport information
(Your son couldn't be travelling EL Al as they don't fly Friday evening/Sat)
To call Israel from the US, you dial
011-972-area code WITHOUT the zero, then the phone number.

Haven't heard from my friend yet

On Kayak, they show an El Al flight departing Tel Aviv at midnight and another at 1 am (Sat am).

I spoke to someone at El Al and there are no flights between Fri night and Sat am. I wonder why Kayak shows that? I also found a long lost cousin who is getting me specific sherut info. My son will just have to figure it out while he's there using that info or Nesher. btw El Al's 800 # from the US is 1-800-223-6700. You need to be a member of the Mosad to find out!

Think of it this way Centralparkgirl --if your son is on an
El Al flight, at least you know he will have no problem with public transportation issues.

Kayak and some other websites are a little hard to use with flights to/from Israel and NY.
Since El Al has flights leaving TLV at midnight and at 1 am, they sometimes show up on results for the day before AND/OR the day after.
So if you search for Saturday flights, you might get the SUNDAY very early morning (midnight or 1am flights) OR you might get Friday very early morning (which effectively is Thursday very late night).
Add into the mix that Continental's flights TLV to EWR leave just before midnight (so they don't always show up on the same list of results that show the El AL flights leaving just a few minutes later)--Well, that makes for complicated searching!
(My friend who used to live in Israel had no additional info. He always took Nesher cabs on a "regular" day and didn't know any more than we do about Friday night/saturday/holiday schedules)

You're exactly right AlexA. We're now waiting to hear what flight he will be on for the return extension. It will be either a 1 am or 10:40 am flight, probably on a Sunday. He will book a Sherut a few days before. My cousin said they're about 50 ILS which is a bargain for door to door service imo. Thanks for your help!
