Getting through customs in JNB, do we have enough time??

My friend and I are traveling from the USA through London to Krugar National Park, South Africa. However we were unable to get a full connecting flight. Our first ticket ends at JNB where we will have 3 hours to get through customs, get our luggage and recheck in for the flight to Krugar National Park. Will we have enough time? Or do we need to somehow get our tickets combined into one? And how do we do this if we need to?
Any help is appreciated! Its our first time to Africa!

Unless your flight is delayed, 3 hours is plenty of time. Are your tix with same/affilliated airline? If not, there's little chance to combine them. If so, you can do it at the airport.

The best way to avoid missing your connection is to carry on. We just got back from three weeks in S Africa and had no trouble packing in just our carry ons. Add washing powder, take out clothes.

We had cancellations both ways LHR - JNB June 3 and June 25 on BA.

Christabir,

So what happened with your cancellations?

I agree that carrying everything makes even more sense in this case. I wear a travel/safari vest and stuff everything in there. Not very attractive, but it works.

Oh travelynn, it sucked. We were able to snag seats in coach (from biz) on a flight two hours later to JNB. And the other direction, we were also put on the next flight. Lesson learned - book the first flight so maybe you can get on the next one! We survived, just inconvenienced. The trip was so great I barely remember the bad stuff. My trip report is pending...

rhester- are you renting a car? If so, find the Pick n Pay in Nelspruit for any supplies you might need. We bought a cooler and some food for our week in Kruger. We also went to Oasis water and bought a big (huge) jug of water. It worked out perfectly. If not renting a car, never mind.

You might still be able to check your luggage all the way through, ask in the US when you check-in.

It's definitely worth trying to do this in case your ex-London flight is delayed. If everything is on time you have plenty of time.
