Generic malarone now availbale in Canada
Good news! Just purchased some here at Costco for $3.30 CDN per tab compared to the name brand at $4.71 CDN per tab.
Still expensive but a little lighter on the wallet. |
Thanks for posting this. I thought it would be cheaper but it's better than before!
|
Even cheaper would have been nice but then every little bit helps!
My apologies for the typo in the subject line. :( |
Good to hear and every few cents lower in cost is worth it.
When the generic became available in the States, I was surprised that the difference in price wasn't all that great either. However, more often than not I still use Lariam with no side effects and it's still cheaper. |
Sandi, I still use Larium, too. I've never had problems with it and don't want to get overseas and have the issue my sister did. She took Larium on her first safari... no problems. She took Malarone on her second one and was sick the whole trip. It took her months to get the stuff out of her system.

Doesn't it depend upon the effectiveness of the malarial medication where you're going?
|
Fingers crossed - haven't had any side effects with malarone the last 2 safaris. Just a few dreams that were a bit more vivid than usual.
|
Sharon - Recall that situation with your sister. But haven't heard of any similar since.
I started out with Lariam 19/yrs ago and when Malarone became available (around 2000) decided to try that. Did so and still no side-effects, not even weird dreams... it was just a pill. But more often I revert to the Lariam as to cost, no side-effects and only taken 1/tab weekly. I prefer to go with 'easy.' Everyone will react differently to any med, whether for malaria or other disease... just the way it is, but important that if something is off, best one stop using. Elizabeth_S - yes it does depend where traveling as when we visited Southeast Asia - Thailand, Cambodia, Burma - we had to go with Malarone as Lariam was no longer effective in this part of the world. However, Malarone and Lariam and even doxy still work in East Africa. We just all have to keep up to date with what works or not, depending on where traveling. |
