best car rental in israel

anyone have suggestions for renting a car in israel? Should I do it there or from the US online? I want to rent a car for 5 days from Tel Aviv and then drive all over the country. Thanks for your input!

Try Eldan for car rental. They are usually cheaper than the US companies

They give a discount if you reserve the car online. I used one from Jerusalem and they were easy to deal with. However, other posts have suggested checking your credit card company before you go about insurance as not as many offer that benefit as in years past. I chose to take out the insurance. Once you see the way they drive, you'll do the same. (or will have checked your credit card before you left.)

A. Only MasterCard would insure rental cars in Israel.

B. I would estimate an automatic car, the size of a Mazda 3, Corolla or a Focus to be about $40 a day. As a tourist you don't pay VAT (sales tax).

They have smaler cars, though, and manual too, which are less expensive.

C. Check Eldan's (the largest, and by far the best in Israel) web site to get a good idea of cars and rates.

Rentals are about the same as here. We had a Ford Focus (my boys are 6 ft tall- didn't want them scrunched in the back seat) and it was 180 for 3 days including insurance. (that was about 15/day) The car was badly scratched when we got it, so I wasn't too worried about damage, but of course someone managed to break a tail-light in a parking lot. It only turned out to be $75. (500 deductible on their insurance) Enjoy! Once you get out of the city and onto the toll road the driving is easy.
