Full moon and its effect on wildlife viewing during night game drives

I could not help but notice that during the last full moon that the night game drives featured in the Leopards Of Simbambili series were a little quiet. I went back one month and it seemed to be the same way the prior month.

During my last safari, I was in the Lower Zambezi National Park at Kulefu Tented Camp, and I was there during a full moon. Unwittingly, I was actually looking forward to the full moon, thinking that it would have some strange effect on the animals and that there would be plenty of action. Instead, however, everything seemed to be dead quiet. Not only was it quiet on the night of the full moon, but it was also quiet on the two preceding nights and for a couple nights afterward.

Is it a general rule that night gameviewing is very weak during full moons? This has me concerned enough to be planning my next safari when there is NOT a full moon and with enough space between my safari and the full moon so that my night game drives will be at their best possible potential.

I would love to hear the experience of others during full moon night game drives, and surrounding nights around the full moon. Lastly, please take a look at the new Africa travel forum at www.tagasafaris.co.za. In addition to hosting the Leopards of Simbambili documentary, this may be an excellent place to discuss primarily safari in Southern Africa without coming across all of the Northern Africa and non wildlife related threads.
