Janischa and Jack,

Some months ago I was half-planning staying at Ikoma in June. I’ll be very interested in your trip reports. A relatively small and reasonably priced tented camp is exactly what I want. The negative aspects reported by Eben – broken windows in reception area, stained tents, overgrowth, scary looking mosquito net in the dining room – aren’t of the kind that worry me. I like the photos on his website, with the exception of the bathroom that looks too closed – and the prices that only in April and May look somewhat reasonable. The second thread where Lisa tells about a woman who had stayed at Ikoma and saw no large animals at all worries me a lot more. I hope it was just very bad luck. For some reason, Moivaro has renamed the camp with the much less descriptive “Serengeti Tented Camp”. Today I got hold of the February issue of National Geographic and Ikoma Camp is featured in it! There’re just a few but very positive lines – though I don’t like the word “enlarge” - and there’s a photo of a nice looking canvas bathroom.

janischa, here's our itinerary:

We arrive at JRO and overnight at Kigongoni Lodge; then a day and night at Gibbs Farm; then on to Ikoma for two nights followed by two nights at Olakira.

Nyamera, I had read some time ago that Ikoma was changing hands and that improvements were to be made, so I guess that has taken place. Like you, I also don't understand the name change as the camp is not located inside the Serengeti at all, close to it, but not inside it, so the new name might cause some confusion. It is close to the Ikoma Gate and Ikoma seems to me to be a very good and appropriate name for the camp. They should have asked us before making the change.
