Food in Tanzania
 

Hi,

This is my first post here.
My hubby and I have almost completely booked a safari with Good Earth and for Dec-Jan and I'm just wondering what the food is like at the standard lodges - we'll basically eat any type of food and try anything. The lodges we're most likely staying at are: Lake Manyara Hotel, Seronera Wildlife Lodge and Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge.

Any feedback on these or the food in general? Is it mostly buffet?

I was at the Wildlife Lodges several years ago and the food was mostly buffet as I recall. Very good with lots of variety such as salads and fruit that is fine to eat at the lodges. I've honestly never had a bad meal on safari, quite the opposite I indulge too much. Unless you seek it out, strange food is not part of the average meal.

I'm sure you'll enjoy the food as well as the safari very much.

If you eat any type of food and will try anything then sample or ask for the traditional ugali for one of your meals.

Your trip is not far away.

I know you will get good food at the Serena (it is the Serena?)

Yes try Ugali (but ask them just to make a little for you, if you are not used to it. It's very heavy). Should be eaten with something spicey, or tasty with a gravey or stew... not with dry food or on its own.

Irio is much nicer.
I do enjoy some Sakumawiki.

Swahili food is delicious and spicy... especially at the coast. All the Arab and Indian influences... enjoy.

Fresh mangos, bananas that taste of bananas. Green oranges (don't know why they don't call them "Greens").

You will not get GREAT cake in East Africa... but good food similar to donuts, think they are called mandazi, triangle shaped.

I hope they do prepare some East African dishes for you!

We stayed at these lodges in Feb of this year. The food was just fine.
