I'm one of the ones who gained a pound a day on safari and was sick for a day and a half! i blame it (the weight gain) on the bread at Luangwa River Lodge and the "homestyle cooking" at Chongwe. the illness was from the water swallowed in the shower after the peeping elephant incident i'm sure. it was day 8 of malarone so i don't think that was the cause.

stvmic,
Congratulations on your first safari trip to Africa. Don't dwell too much on stomach problems....just take precautions. Bring Pepto tablets, Immodium and anything your doctor recommends with you. Be sure that included anti-malaria meds. The most important rule is DRINK BOTTLED WATER ONLY (never use the bottled water from your hotel or safari, it may just be tap water and not thoroughly boiled). AND BE VERY CAREFUL TO KEEP YOUR HANDS CLEAN BEFORE EATING, those little packages of about 10 hand wipes are excellant, so are the little bottles of waterless disinfectant.
My husband and I lived in West Africa's Liberia for 3 years in the mid 60's, we stayed in Niarobi for a short time afterwards, lived in Europe, Asia and Central America for a while.. then returned to Africa to visit my brother in Zimbabwe several times during the past seven years. He took us on safaris to Hwange and Kruger, then to Mozambique during this time. Not once were we ill from water or food...just be careful and have a good time. - Joan
