Fodors killing my iPhone + notebook?

It is becoming increasingly difficult for me to participate on this forum. The 25 topic limit is a huge issue because I am not a regular but I also notice the CPU usage shooting up to 80% plus when starting Fodors in IE. My iPhone also slows down.

Anyone else notice the same?

Celia Aug 26th, 2009 08:01 AM

I've really noticed slow response times in this forum for the last two days.

climbhighsleeplow Aug 26th, 2009 08:30 AM

I may have found the issue that started a day ago I think. Now either IE or my viruscheckers are going nuts:

Can you try browser Firefox?
Many people prefer Firefox. It is free and easy to download and use.

The new re-write of the forum wasn't an improvement, for sure. There are some great off the shelf software solutions for online forums.

cary999 Aug 26th, 2009 10:11 AM

Yeah, getting away from "frames" was supposed to be better. Better for who?

Celia Aug 26th, 2009 10:23 AM

I use Firefox. The delays here on Fodor's started yesterday or the day before.

sandi Aug 26th, 2009 12:47 PM

Fodor's is just slow today whether on IE, Firefox or thru AOL. Happens on occasion. This too shall pass!

andybiggs Aug 26th, 2009 12:52 PM

slowness is one thing, but bad functionality is another. It is 2009, and the forum reeks of 1995. :-)

Ok, I will stop my griping.

Celia Aug 27th, 2009 06:35 AM

Let me gripe a little more ...

The 25 topic limit is a real pain, especially since the search function doesn't work. You can't even find the threads you are participating in.

cary999 Aug 27th, 2009 07:09 AM

Yeah, "search", seems to still have problems.

regards - tom

sf7307 Aug 27th, 2009 09:27 AM

<<<You can't even find the threads you are participating in.>>>

Yes, you can. Just click on your own name and the posts you started and posts you commented on will come up.

<<<The 25 topic limit is a real pain>>>

Instead of looking at the list on the left, just immediately click on "View all activity" -- you'll at least get all activity for the day, then if you want to, you can go back further by date. Admittedly, this works better for the US and Europe forums where the number of daily threads is way more than 25.

Katie_H Aug 27th, 2009 09:57 AM

Just wanted to pop in and let you know that we're investigating the slowness; I realize it's very annoying and I apologize. Hopefully we will have it fixed shortly.

Celia Aug 27th, 2009 01:24 PM

SF7307, I know how to use the search function; what I said is, it doesn't work! When I search for my posts, I get somebody else's.

I also know how to View All Activity; I just think it's not as satisfying or useful as seeing 50 posts was.

Thanks, Katie.

cary999 Aug 27th, 2009 01:35 PM

TWo days ago I searched six-ways-from-Sunday trying to find a topic I started a few months ago, spent probably 20 minutes trying 5 different ways and never found it.

If someone can direct me to it and show me how, thanks. It as about airport lounges in the Frankfurt airport. Forum? I searched several. I will be there in two days.

regards - tom

Katie_H Aug 27th, 2009 02:11 PM

We believe that the slowness may have been due to a particular ad, which has now been pulled. If you experience an improvement in speed (or not) please let us know.

Tom--will post on your other search question in one moment.

Katie_H Aug 27th, 2009 02:12 PM

Celia--are you trying to enter your name in the search box? The search cannot search posters names. In order to search your posts you'd need to use the advanced search and enter "Celia" where it says Member name.

Katie_H Aug 27th, 2009 02:22 PM

Tom--I'm stumped too; I didn't find it using search. The only airport related question I saw that you started I found in your profile by looking at your topics--it was about the airport in Amsterdam. If it's not in your topic list, it's not on the site. I can direct your query to our database manager to see why it would no longer be on the site; I don't seen any reason why it would have been removed.

ShayTay Aug 27th, 2009 02:25 PM

Tom, ask your question again. I'll be there in a couple of weeks myself.

Patty Aug 27th, 2009 02:47 PM

Is this it Tom?

http://www.fodors.com/community/afri...-on-strike.cfm

I searched using Frankfurt and FRA and neither worked but I remembered I had commented on it but it took me looking through pages and pages of threads I'd commented on to find it ;)

Katie_H Aug 27th, 2009 02:58 PM

I hope this is it; I was looking at just the topics that you started. If it is, thanks Patty.

The main problem then is that this topic isn't indexed at all (I just did a simple search for "staff on strike" that should have brought it up); so that's what I'll follow up on. It should be; this has happened a few times when we've had a short blip/downtime on the site. Sorry for the hassle--

cary999 Aug 27th, 2009 03:37 PM

YES!! That is it!!!

But I was wrong about my originating thread. But I did search on simply words - Frankfurt, FRA, lounge, all over the forums but apparently did come come up with the right combination.

Thanks now have 4 hours to review (and finish packing) before heading to airport.

Thanks again Patty

regards - tom

Katie_H Aug 27th, 2009 05:04 PM

Already heard back from our developer--the topic has been added to the site's search index. Strange fluke; might have been having some trouble on that day back in March.

All is well that ends well. Enjoy your trip Tom!

cary999 Aug 27th, 2009 06:07 PM

Thanks all. Getting anxious, I get pretty wound up getting ready all day long, so many things to try and remember. I'm sure it'll be great.

CU on Fodors in three weeks - tom

aby Aug 28th, 2009 08:15 AM

So, Eben - this is your excuse for 'diluting' your posts? ;-)

Yeah this Forum's "Face-Lift" lessened my motivation to participate too... hope the planned changes will fix some of the

but my guess is that you've had enough of answering the same <u>basic</u> questions over and over again...
i have an idea which may help with this issue

Celia Aug 28th, 2009 10:24 AM

Katie, it may be that when I was searching for my posts I made the mistake you suggest. (I was using advanced search.) But I have, two or three times in the last few days, done an advanced search for a thread I either started or participated in, and couldn't find it. I guess I never used the exact combination of words that found it.

Celia Aug 28th, 2009 10:24 AM

The slowness has vanished. Thanks.

climbhighsleeplow Aug 28th, 2009 11:18 AM

Performance is back to normal. Thank you Katie.

aby - I actually get to spend more time in Africa now which means less time on Fodors and that's a good thing! So far in 2009 we spent Feb & March in East Africa and the whole of May in South Africa (sadly my dad passed away while I was there but before his passing I did 2 weeks in the Garden Route). And Oct to mid-Nov we are back in East Africa followed by 2 weeks in South Africa!

My traveling iPhone is becoming my web companion and if a site is not iPhone friendly I lose interest quick. The sign of the times I guess!

Scrolling is great - clicking is bad. Very bad. Which is why I prefer 50+ posts to scroll to be halfway able to keep up.

Katie_H Aug 28th, 2009 11:22 AM

Celia-- just checking-- when you do the advanced search, be sure not to enter your member name as a keyword (just in the actual Member name area at the bottom).

Also, the advanced search, like the basic search, will only search topic titles unless you click "search full topics and replies".
