Absolutely the $2600-plus Ferragamo wool jacket for those chilly mornings out in the bush. I would NEVER think about going on safari without one just like that.

But the big question is about that Alexander Wang cashmere cardigan....can we give it to the lodge to launder?? Could it be flown to J'Burg and returned to me at the lodge overnight?

But's it's so crazy, here I am just back from Mombo and everyone wore t-shirts, jeans, chinos, etc.......East Africa has Botswana beat on the style front, I guess.

Very timely suggestions, as I am just starting my packing fora safari to Kenya and
Tanzania. Guess I’ll head out to Walmart to see if they have any of these items at a better price. :-)

Oh, goodness, @eskscrunchy, what a deliciously hilarious article. I just dropped bythe Africa forum as I was in the Masai Mara a few months ago, and I'm heading back to Mala Mala/Mashatu next July. I thought I'd see what folks were talking about these days and I'm thrilled it's women's safari fashion! Fortunately, I have plenty of time to look for the suggested footwear before Botswana. I hadn't thought of wedge leopard platform shoes for the bush, but I need to keep my mind open to new ideas--like breaking my ankle on the way to dinner. Fortunately a selection of $290 silk scarves doesn't take up too much weight on the bush planes, although something tells me that if you are rocking a $2700 Ferragamo jacket, you probably have your own airplane. You know which jacket....the jacket "that will do well in the city post trip" ;-) I would love for the writer of that absurd article to actually go on safari--in a time when it's good and dry, and sunny, and bumpy and dusty. Those days when you have so much dust in your hair you can't even put your fingers through it. Yes, those wonderful, dusty, photographically stunning days where the only things that you need at the end is a G&T and a shower and another G&T.

I'm SO glad to hear from you, BH!!!!! And will be eager as can be to read about the Mashatu/Mala Mala combo. I have a friend (I met through the travel planner I use in CapeTown) who also posts here (SDSunflower) and she is considering the same combo.

NOW I finally know why everyone at Mombo was staring at me!! I was wearing regular Levis, not the mandatory $350 Levi's from their Cone Denim line. I mean, I've made a lot of packing mistakes in the past but this one takes the cake!!

Hey Ekscruchy! I absolutely loved the Mala Mala/Mashatu combo two years ago. So much so, I booked it again. I'm doing another private safari with a great south African wildlife photographer. I actually shouldn't have started my African adventures with a private safari; you sort of get, well, spoiled not having to share : ) This past January, I had a great 3-guest photography "Predator safari" in the Masai Mara with well-known photographer Greg DuToit. I stayed at Naibor Camp which was a fun experience and Kicheche Bush Camp which was absolutley divine! There were lots of gorgeous cheetahs in both places which was so great given their scarcity in Southern Africa.

I do love the feel of Mala Mala and it is a wonderland of wildlife. You are hardly ever on roads; you smash through the bush most of the time--which is so great. Mashatu is like a big family--you almost feel hugged the entire time you are there. The property is amazing and massive. Oh, and the elephant hide is such a winner for photographers. When I was there last time, Mashatu had just hired a chef from Mombo camp and the food was beyond amazing at Mashatu. I'm hoping he's still there.

Before my Africa trip next july, I'm heading back to India for the Pushkar Camel festival and generally around Rajasthan and then to Patagonia and Antartica for Christmas. I wanted to be somewhere away for Christmas and I couldn't think of a better place than Antarctica : )
