Rocco, I can't imagine dieting with the way Alesandra cooks, although I know she is working really hard at it also.
By the way the answer I have found to the gross sugar free syrups, is to sprinkle Splenda over it. It then makes the syrup taste sweet with no after taste.

Hey a weight loss section of the thread. I was hovering at around 230 about a month ago.
I have been wanting to get of the blood pressure medication I am on. I keep gettign told if I can significantly reduce weight I probably won't need the pills.
The ironic thing is that I work out heavy cardio 3 - 6 times a week. BUT I always then eat large portions of food because "Hey I work out!"
So in the last month, all coffee (including all the sugar I consume with it) GONE, white flour GONE, (my only breads are wheat, grain types) white rice GONE, a couple of bags of cookies/crackers a week GONE, eating after 7PM GONE, much much smaller portions of food.
Plus I stepping up the intensity of my workouts.
I am now at 214. Getting to 200 will be REALLY hard. I can't even remember being at that weight.
And then trying to maintain that...

Napamatt,
Carla has left the photos in my hands so I may edit a shy Fodorite out of the photos who does not want to be included in the group photo. (This Fodorite was not aware that the photo would be posted online)
As far as the marathon goes, I am pretty serious this time around. In years past I have never changed my eating habits so I killed myself but never quite got anywhere. I am nearly down to my marriage weight (which was nothing impressive, but at least it is a measuring stick) and should be down to my (last) marathon weight by the time I return from Africa in early December.
If not the Catalina Island Marathon on March 17th, then surely the Rock N Roll Marathon in San Diego (which I did in 2002) on the first Sunday of June, just before I spend 3 weeks in Zimbabwe (or there is an Edinburgh or Loch Ness Marathon around that same time that may be more interesting. If nothing else, maybe it will allow me to outrun the fellow guests next time there is an elephant charge.

Wayne,
Congratulations on your own weight loss. I am doing many of the same things you are and it is difficult but it is worth it as the weight comes off.
About working out, if you are doing heavy cardio work, I suggest you try Cytomax...whatever calories it has will allow you to work off far more calories than in the Cytomax and it definitely aids in recovery, as well. Only Cytomax allowed me to run three marathons when I was really way too heavy to be running marathons (just a few pounds less than I am now, but plugging away for 26.2 miles).
Carol,
I will have to try that trick about sprinkling Splenda on the sugar free syrup.
Yes, Alexsandra is a fantastic cook...the only thing saving me is that she, too, is losing weight right now and is not cooking the food that you enjoyed at the GTG on a regular basis as she has in the past.

Either way, Rocco.......i am going to google Cytomax right now.....
I have my marathon guides book, and that Catulina Island one looks a killer......even though on trails, it is probably the hilliest course ever- you sure you want to attempt that?

Hari,
I figure that I could be about 25 pounds less for the Catalina Marathon than for any of my previous marathons.
The concern, however, is less with the weight than only having December, January and February to get ready for the marathon before tapering. However, even if it takes me 6+ hours, I do think that I will challenge myself to this course. My last major trail run was a 20 mile trail race on a very hilly course that I ran on only a month worth of training and heavier than I was for any marathons...I finished dead last and resisted "suggestions" from course monitors that I drop out, but I finished.
It should be a nice cool day and with a very generous 8 hour cutoff time (I cannot imagine that I will need more than 6.5 hours), I should be able to complete this race.
It just looks like such an incredible race. Here is a slideshow of a past race:

I think I would rather come across a Cape Buffalo than these Buffalo on Catalina, and they have wild boars roaming the island, as well!

Rocco,
Thks for the slideshow....saw the first 30 pics or so....will view the rest from home later tonite. This looks more like a trail running safari....My goodness....big buffalo all over and the bald eagle to add.....
What's next coyote and mountain lion?
Ideally, would like to be in the middle of the pack.....the lead runners would scare the wildlife away and they would return to the trail-side around the time the back of the pack gets there......
I think with a solid 6-8 week training, you should be able to do it....anything less and will be torture on race day.......tapering (i only do 3-4 days full rest prior to race day....maybe 12 miles the sunday prior otherwise, i find myself too rusty)
