Not to hijack the thread but, Deb, enjoy your visit to Izmir. I grew up in Izmir and still have family living there. I am amazed at the changes each time I go back. I've had family over visiting for the past two years, so I haven't been back since March 2004. Hope to go back next summer.
P.S. The new archeological museum on the fair grounds has some nice exhibits; and if you haven't been before, Ephesus, is a must. The beachtowns of Cesme and Alacati might make for an interesting change from the city - fall is one of the best times to visit (although the water will likely be cold).
Anyway, have a terrific time.

Actually, I didn't know if it would be appropriate to comment on them on the Africa Forum. They're so terrific, I felt like I was getting sprayed when the punch landed. I am curious about how you got some of those shots -- did you take continuous shots when you thought the punch(es) was/were coming? What amazing lens were you using and what ISO did you set the camera on (I'm assuming here that you were using a digital camera)?

Mediatorr,
When my ego needs feeding, it is perfectly appropriate to comment on such things in the forum!
Glad you liked the photos.
Boxing photography is very tricky because if you wait until the action starts, you have already missed the shot. As a result, anticipation is the key.
I have gotten to be pretty good at guessing when a fighter is about to let loose with a flurry of punches...just gotta watch the legs, shoulders and see when he is setting up his opponent.
Although in most fights I only take one camera body, a Canon 20d with a 24-75mm f/2.8 lens, for this fight I took along my second Canon 20d body and purchased a new lens, a fixed length Canon 85mm f/1.8.
With boxing, most shots are done at ISO 1600 but even this is not very noisy on a Canon 20d. However, the Canon 85mm allowed me to back it down to an ISO 800 and still shoot at the same speed (alternating between 1/640th to 1/800th of a second). Anything slower than those shutter speeds does not lead to the crispest photos.
Although I love the Canon 85mm for its low light capabilities, I did find it to blur much easier than the Tamron 24-75mm f/2.8. However, when it did not blur, the photos were far superior to those from the Tamron zoom lens. Although I did not really take advantage of it for such, the Canon 85mm f/1.8 will prove to be a superior lens for portrait type shots in the future (I do have a less than ideal photo of baseball legend, Pete Rose, and basketball legend, Kareem Abdul Jabbbar, amongst the photos from celebrities in attendance).
Here are my photos from the previous weekend from Pechanga Casino in Temecula, including a photo of Denzel Washington who co-manages a very talented heavyweight contender.

Alexsandra is in the background, seated ringside and facing the camera.
Hopefully my continued boxing photography will also lead to better wildlife photos as I believe it did for me in Tanzania. Now that I have Photoshop CSII and I am taking private classes, I do hope that my wildlife photos will start taking on a more professional appearance!
Okay, thanks for the floor and the opportunity to talk about my boxing photos!

Wow, good progress here! Count me in for the 14th.
Rocco, great photos (although I'm a lover..not a fighter fan)
It would be fantastic to meet "the infamous" Julian in Dec!
Cooncat and Dennis...what troopers! I can also do complimentary airport shuttle service from LAX (10 mins away), Long Beach(20 mins) or Orange County (35 mins).
Looking forward to meeting everyone, thank you Rocco and Alexsandra.

Rocco, Since you're a pro, you NEED the new Canon 50mm f/1.2 lens. It's ONLY going to be about $1600 (which is all the more amazing considering that the Canon 50mm f/1.8 is about $80). I have a 20d also and would love to have another one (I'd be happy to take one off of anyone's hands who is eager to get a 30d).
If there's another LA GTG, remind me to tell you about Temecula. I live in Westwood but have and know about significant history in Temecula. I'll tell you in exchange for some tips about punch anticipation which I can sorely use in karate.

Well, we will be fresh back from Kenya...and we will probably be hard to shut up about our trip...would we still be welcome? We're in Redlands, Ca...about an hour from LA, when there's no traffic, which is NEVER!!!!

Spiegelcjs,
Yes, October 14th is the final date.
I ask that all those attending please e-mail me a week before the event so that I get a clear RSVP list rather than one generated a month beforehand.
I would estimate we are up to about 20 guests so far and I would like to cap it at no more than 30. So, it would be fine to drop me an e-mail now to express your interest and then just follow up again a week before, as well.
While I appreciate everyone's kind offer to bring something, please just bring yourselves and allow me to take care of the rest.

Hi Rocco,
Took a look at your photos. Most excellent! Esp. the ones toward the bottom. <<ggg>> Hmmm, an aspect of the Sweet Science I had not considered, nor, I suspect, Liebling when he coined the term in the 1800's. However, most apt.
