Flight to/from Egypt
 

I am booking a short trip to Cairo with my daughter after she finishes her study abroad semester in Rome. My flight options include. Egypt Air, Alitalia, and Turkish Airlines. Turkish requires a stop and the other two flights are non stop so I am leaning on ruling that flight out.

I am leery of Egypt Air from a safety perspective. How good is Alitalia? I am not so concerned about in flight entertainment and how nice the staff is. How safe are the planes and staff? On time rates? Can someone give me some feedback on those airlines?

We are flying from Cairo to Tel Aviv and are looking at Air Sinai. Any comments on that one?

Last year I flew through Rome to & from Cairo and faced the same choice. I'd flown Alitalia before and it was fine so chose it again. Now, having flown both airlines, if I had it to do over again, I'd have chosen Egyptair. I haven't kept up lately but Alitalia has been in a constant state of bankruptcy for a while and it was a source of some anxiety leading up to the flights. Though I'm sure Alitalia planes are sufficiently maintained, it's my impression that Egyptair is the better managed choice. I used them for 2 internal flights and would next time for international.

Are those your only options? I know a bit too much about Egypt Air to be able to recommend it. A few years back, they had a number of inflight engine shut downs and were on the verge of losing their permissions to land in some countries. They averted that, but I'm not at all impressed that they are well-managed.

All things relative, I said the better managed of the 2 mentioned.

Well, I am now looking at a Lufthansa flight through Frankfurt. It is way more expensive but I can use miles and the extra stop is annoying but I feel better about the airline.

Both transatlantic flights but here's my feedback:

I flew Alitalia once many years ago and never will again. Surly service and their solution to an overflowing toilet was to spray perfume all around the cabin. All 4 flights with them were late.

My Lufthansa flight from Boston was cancelled due to a strike in 2015 (this happens often, so be aware of it. Usually they don't cancel transatlantic flights, only European, but this time they did!). United Mileage rep rebooked me immediately on Turkish Airlines. In a word, it was awesome. Like flying used to be. We were stuck in the very back of economy and had tons of legroom, room for our bags. Service was friendly, food was DELICIOUS. The layover in Istanbul was fun, even though we didn't have time to leave the airport. Lots of shopping and really good restaurants. (If longer than 6 hours you can avail yourself of a city tour!) I'm looking for a reason to fly Turkish again, to be honest. I just haven't had a destination match their routes.

I'd never fly Egypt Air after their crash many years ago and having read similar about their engines. Never.

I only checked this thread because the title seemed so . . . Biblical!

Another vote for Turkish Airlines. About the best I've flown, and with your itinerary, it makes more sense to stop in Istanbul than Frankfort.

I've been on several (5-6) EA flights this year. This include 2 non-stop trans-atlantic flights

The only thing I can say negative is that the attendants are a bit ....... surley.

As far as safty goes? Based on my experience, EA is, by all appearance, as safe as any carrier I've ever flown with.

I understand Luftstansa and Air Emirates fly to Cairo, but I don't know if they fly from Rome. Everyone I talked to says Emirates is the best!
