First time to South Africa
 

Hi Uk 60 year olds looking to visit South Africa staying in Cape Town then driving along garden route finishing of with a 2 day stay at a game reserve. We are very flexible with dates and time but I prefer travelling when it's not too hot prefer temperatures around 72. We were looking mid March but it looks like Easter school holidays. Are we better waiting until mid April.
Is it safe driving yourself rather than a tour.
Do you think 5 days are enough for Cape Town
Any suggestions on good 4 or 5 star hotels or apartments.
Any suggestions on which game reserve to visit. Preferably near to Port Elizabeth.
Any must sees.
My husband also would like to do 1 day deep sea fishing. Any recommendations.

I would definitely wait till holidays are finished so mid April. It is safe to drive yourselves on the Garden Route, gives you flexibility. As when you travel anywhere just be aware and don't leave valuables lying in your car, accommodation etc.
Not sure of your budget but look at Kwandwe, Shamwari or Amakahla in Eastern Cape. There are many 4 or 5 star hotels in the waterfront area depending on budget.
You could look at hooked on africa or big blue fishing for that option or the hotel could advise or book for you.
Things in CT: either on the hop on hop off bus or a private tour.

Cape Peninsula tour - cape point , boulders, Kirstenbosch
Table mountain and Robben island
Wine farms in Stellenbosch or Franschhoek
Fishing would probably be in Hout Bay

I agree with Sandy. Definitely avoid holidays. My only added suggestion would be to spend at least three nights in a game reserve, either the ones mentioned or in Addo National Park. For Addo options, check the SANParks website.

You can drive the Garden Route one way, drop off the car and fly out of Port Eliz.

Not sure about fishing, but maybe Hermanus?

Sounds like fun! You're going to love it.

As someone in the same general age group, we found 5 nights in Cape Town to be a good amount. We could have stayed longer... this is always the case... but we were ready to move on to our safari adventures. I say the more safaris the better... so when given a choice... go for the extra safari time.

Can't speak to a 4 or 5 star hotel.. we travelled on a budget... but I will say that we found the hotel standards throughout southern africa to be better than equivalent-rated hotels in europe. happy planning!!
