first time in s. africa

I will be going to S. Africa in October hopefully, is it a good time to visit? This is my first time in S. Africa to visit a friend. What do you suggest I do for activities on my own, I don't want to be an inconvenience to my friend. I am planning to stay for about 3 weeks. I need suggestion on lodging places to eat and places to see. By the way I'm from the Philippines. Thanks

South Africa is a big country. If you'll tell us where in South Africa you will be visiting, what are your likes and dislikes, and type of activities you enjoy - I'm sure you'll be able to get some replies.
