First page National Geographic: ridiculous??

Perhaps this is just a silly question....: like so many of us we have made hundreds and hundreds of safari photos - especially with the digital cameras you just shoot away, making selection long and difficult.
Still my husband made one photo which I honestly believe deserves a frontpage, now is it completely ridiculous to get a photo cover on National Geographic magazine???
Not at all for money reasons it is just it is so beautiful and I would so much like to try to 'organize' this (secretly) what do you think? could it work?
By the way it is a female leopard 2 legs only as she 'stood up' and stretched like a man (fore legs just hanging in the air!!) as she spotted something in the distant and at that very second my husband was so lucky to shoot that photo. Our ranger said on all the drives we made no-one ever had a leopard photo like that - it is just amazing - sheer luck in fact!

Try emailing National Geographic directly with your suggestion?

Smithsonian magazine also does a photo contest that might be a little easier to participate in, I think it is closed for 2008 but worth checking out.

In the past NG would not accept unsolicited photo submissions so they are probably a long shot at best (though I did hear the editor say once that if you have photos documenting aliens from space they MIGHT reconsider). They wouldn't use the photo anyway if it didn't tie in to a feature story inside the mag.

There are much better nature photo mags around with less tight submission requirements (though NG has a much larger subscription base). Try "Nature's Best" or "Outdoor Photographer" or one of the many Africa-centric magazines too.

Hi ivee

I have to agree with Bill, mags such as Africa Geo are a possibility. Even I managed to get one published
For the Dec/Jan edition (page 26/27)as the "Caught in the Act" monthly winner.

Thanks to everyone for all the info, I am going to try my luck.

Marc: thank you for sharing these beautiful photos, the one in the magazine is wonderful, but I also like very much the one where you see the baboon with his arm inside the hole!
cheers ivee
