finding travel items in NYC

Sandi and Ann

I live in Manhattan and before I order from catalogs or on line sites, can you suggest some stores that sell travel items? i am looking for things like small flashlights, inflatable cushions, quick-dry socks, mosquito spray, reading light ......I live near Paragon, but not sure that they carry these kind of things.......i have a car and can drive somewhere .....thanks much,
Susan

Flashlight, inflatable cushions can be found in almost any luggage store. Mossie spray in any pharmacy (Duane Reade, CVC, etc.) or try the health food stores. Don't know about the socks... I just take the few pair I own and hope to remember to even wear them. Reading light - try Paragon. Just walk around your neighborhood and I'm sure you can find all you need within a few blocks in any direction.

Try the Container Store. They have the little kiosoks around the checkout counters and they contain a million things. I've gotten duct tape, TSA locks for luggage, small travel containers, etc. I love it!

I was going to suggest Paragon, but you may also want to try Tent & Trails (its down on Park Place). Or EMS (I think its on West B'way).

thanks for the advice......just needed a little direction ( no pun intended) i will to the CVS on Park Ave. South, head to Paragon on Broadway, and on to the Container Store on 6th Ave.

I am pretty certain Paragon has all of that stuff.

Paragon opposite the ABC store (18th and broadway) is good, but, their service stinks!!!

quick drying socks, you can also find at any running store in NYC. Some mentions are the Super runners shop (there is one location in Grand Central and one at 3rd ave and 72ndst). New York running company in the mall at Columbus Circle.

Haha, yes

so unfair! sounds like there's a travel store on every corner in NYC. I have to get my stuff online!

A lot of the little stuff I found cheapest at a big drugstore -- small flashlights, reading light, electrical adaptors, small plastic containers, etc. Harmon drugs has a particularly good assortment of travel stuff.
Inflatable cushion I found online.
I prefer the Sawyer time release DEET, which is available at Eckhert drugs.
REI also has stuff -- you can look it up on the website and find out if it is available at a particular store.

As far as NY having a travel store on each corner...maybe it's because we need to get out of town once in a while :)

Susan-
I live in NYC too, and while I have bought hiking/camping/travel gear from Paragon, EMS and Tents&Trails, my favorite store for all this stuff is Campmor on Rt 17 in NJ. They have a huge selection and are much less expensive. I just bought some very stylish (!) zip-off pants there for $29.99.
