Fes cost of a private guide

We are looking at hiring a private guide are unclear on costs. The guide we are looking at charges around $200 per day for his services and a car. This is reasonable for traveling to the desert and mountains but I'm not sure it is needed in the cities.

Riads in Fez have told us they have official guides they use that charge around $30 for a full day.

Does anyone have experience with using guides recommended by hotels or riads and/or with a private guide. I supposed you get what you pay for but is this a fair price for a private guide?

Hi,
A couple of years ago we used a guide recommended by our hotel. He charged $40 for 8 hours to drive us around. We though this was quite reasonable. Oh, but I forgot to mention that this was in Bangkok. Are you going to Bangkok?
