Extra night
We are planning a safari in Botswana - Do you find a 2nd night is needed at the hotel in Joburg when traveling from the NY area?
|
I don't think so. We flew from JFK, arrived late afternoon the next day, dinner, bed. Flew to Zambia the next AM.
|
Definitly not. Depending on your route, you should arrive in Joberg around 3pm from JFK. We did a night at the Intercontinental which is right outside the terminal and very convienent although a bit pricey for what its worth. Although it was nice as you didnt need a cab etc.

On my first trip to South Africa, I spent two nights in Johannesburg because I wanted to visit the city (including a visit to Soweto). But, I would not have needed that second night had I planned on immediately leaving on safari. But, I typically try to spend at least one day in each city to get a sense (albeit a very limited one) of Africa outside the national parks.

I agree with thit_cho. For first trip, 2 nights in JNB is good, one for a good nights sleep and 1 day for sightseeing. After that, 1 night for a good nights sleep should be fine. I personally, am a big believer in getting a good first nights sleep after a long overseas flight.

If you want to spend time in Joberg you need an extra night, if you're desperate for the bush, then one night is all you need.
