Exploring Kenya without a Tour Company

Is Kenya a place that you could arrive in and be safe renting a 4x4 and exploring the country without the assistance of a tour company?

Once you leave Nairobi, you will no longer be a tourist: you will be lunch.
Kenya has few roads, fewer places to stay, and almost nothing in the way of safe places to eat. It has tented camps, a few tourist spots such as The Ark and the Safari Club, but little else in the way of infrastructure. Some of the roads are impassible at times due to mud. Some roads are so rough you can barely drive because they have had no maintenance since the Italian prisoners of war built them during World War II. If you think you are saving money by a "do it yourself" excursion, you in for a sad surprise. Advice: hire a guide or contract with a reputable tour company, and let them do the heavy lifting. In parts of the Maasai Mara and/or Serengeti, roving groups of bandits are quite active and carry AK47s which they do not hesitate to use on unwary tourists. If you doubt my statement, check with the authorities in Nairobi. They will confirm.
