Ethiopian security

Hi,

My wife and I are thinking of travelling to Ethiopia INDEPENDENTLY in September and I have some concern regarding the personal security.

We do not want (and could not afford to us) to use any travel agency nor guides, of course if it is not a must.

We would like to make the northern historical circuit and want to go to the Erta Ale (I know we need to join a group to visit Erta Ale). We would also like to visit the Simien NP or Bale Mountains NP.

And maybe we would like to go to the Omo region. My question is that how safe to travel to Ethiopia independently for only two people using only land public transport?

Is there any way to improve our security?

Is there any extra danger for my wife?

We traveled extensively across Asia and South America but have never been to Africa (except Egypt). So I am not totally familiar with the situation in Ethiopia.

And one more question.

The closest embassy where we can arrange visa in Zurich. So we need to use registered mail to post our passports.

The problem is that the visa is valid only 30 days.

Does it mean we can enter the country e.g. at the 29th day of the visa validity and after entering we can stay in the country 30 days?

Thanks.
