Looks like Ethiopian Airlines has just joined the Star Alliance:

If you've got miles with a Star Alliance carrier, like United/Continental or US Airways, they represent another way to get to Africa with miles. It also looks like they've got a lot of award space available:

Just a heads up on variable quality have
flown OLD DASH 8 prop planes on international
routes that were pretty dodgy.

Ethiopian is flying 'new' 777 on their route between IAD/ADD/JRO.
Can't attest to other routes, but for many here it's that from US to ADD and then JRO.

No Dash 8s.
