Equatorial Guinea

Anybody been to Equatorial Guinea, or specifically to Fernando Po/Bioko island? I've got a friend in Malabo who has invited me to visit, but am curious about the safety, amenities, etc etc etc in the city. (And before you say "Why don't you ask your friend?", it's because Malabo is her hometown and I don't want to be like, "So, is it safe to visit your city or is it gross?").

I know Spanish is the official language, but do most of the people in town actually speak it? I speak Spanish, but that won't help me if everybody only speaks Fang or Bube.

I've travelled to some of the larger cities in South America so am aware that every city in the world isn't like the US, but have never been to Africa.
