El Gouna, any feedback?
 

My wife and I are going to El Gouna in late November. Any tips or advice on where to eat or drink, and excursions would be useful. I had heard that there are not any ATM's, and therfore, need to take cash. Can anyone comment on this please?

Where are you staying?

We spent many weekends/holidays in El Gouna - altho I have to admit, we seldom left the resort. We always stayed at the Movenpick - beautiful grounds, great activities for all, and a wonderful Thai restaurant. (There is also a seafood restaurant - but we have had mixed experiences there).

As for excursions - we have done deep sea fishing, golfing, snorkling, and quad biking into the desert.

I think our hotel had an ATM, so I don't recall that being a problem.

I think you will really enjoy the Movenpick. But be prepared - depending on where your room is, you could have a 5+ minute walk to breakfast.

Oh - and if you haven't been warned - that whole El Gouna/Hurghada area can get quite windy! So while the temps may be warm, the breeze could make it seem a bit chillier!

Also, since it's just the 2 of you, I would try to get a room facing the smaller (adult) pool at the end of the property. I think (???) it's building 7. It tends to be quieter than the other big pool area.

Unless your arrangements are for breakfast and dinner - I would suggest NOT doing the dinner buffet at the resort. It's a decent buffet (if you're on a package) but otherwise we found it very expensive. On site the Thai restaurant and seafood places are good, and there are lots of places in town. (And "town" is about a 10-15 minute walk or a quick bus or water taxi ride.)

PS - regarding the ATM, my husband doesn't really remember if there is an ATM (altho I think there is!) - so it might be worth a call to the hotel, or check their webpage.

Thanks for your comments. And you were absolutely spot on. We were in building 7, and the peace and quiet by the lagoon was exactly what we wanted. The dinner buffet was somewhat over-priced. It was a good 5 minute walk to breakfast.
We tried the Thai restaurant in town, very good, as was Kiki's.
And there is an ATM on the complex.
I would certainly stay at a Movenpick again.

Glad you had a good trip! Visiting El Gouna was always one of our family's favorite things to do when we lived in Egypt. We miss it!
