Cairo Hotels and Safety
Hello everyone,
I'm needing a hotel in Egypt. I'm looking for a luxury hotel near the American University in Cairo but I've been told it's safer to stay in Giza. I was trying to avoid the driving and thought if Zamalek was safe, it would be better than Giza. What about Heliopolis as a safe part of town to stay? Any thoughts at least on these areas for March? Thanks in advance.

As I recall, the Hilton is right at Tahrir Square, not somewhere I'd want to be staying. Zamelek and/or Heliopolis (closer to the airport) should be safe and away from most all of the bruhaha that breaks out on occasion. We stayed in Giza and didn't find the drive all that terrible.

Marriott these days owns most known named hotels worldwide. Believe they're franchised out to every notel chain which names we're familiar.
Can't imagine though without major refurbishing a Hilton now being a Ritz Carlton.
However, can't seriously comment re what changes made in Cairo these past few years.
Maybe drop a note to Debbiie Senters at Casual Cairo Detours. She's a tour operator in Cairo and might have some good ideas for you.

The Nile Hilton was taken over by Ritz Carlton just before the revolution. While there are plans to renovate completely and reopen I don't think much has happened with all the events. While it was once a great location...these days right at Tahrir Square it would be my last choice. Have a feeling Ritz Carlton is not happy with their acquisition.

Marriott has 16 brands of hotels. No, they don't own "most known hotels worldwide," but they've got to get their Book of Mormon into bedside tables worldwide. Believe Best Western affliated hotels are the largest chain.

Bedar - The Marriott chain worldwide may or may not (and many I've stayed in do not) have the book of Mormon somewhere in the room, but in Egypt you will certainly find a little sticker in one of the drawers indicating the direction of Mecca.

Is this finished? Did you come? AUC actually has two campuses now, and likely you don't want to be downtown at all. The new AUC campus is out in New Cairo. There is a JW Marriott not far from it, but better is something called Dusit Thani (or something real close to that). Either of those would be significantly better than anything in town. Otherwise, yes, Heliopolis is a viable possibility too.
