Egyptian beer

Apparently Egypt has two main beers, Saqqara and Stella. Does anyone have any experience with either of these beers? Are they light or dark in color? Bitter or mild in taste? I'm not a big beer drinker but when I do I chose Boulivard Wheet or Samuel Adams or Cuevero or Dos Ecques over Bud Lite (or whatever). So which would I most likely prefer? (remembering it's a beer...lol)

Stella! Darn good and cold when cold was needed.
It's been a few years, but I recall it being light (I don't enjoy dark beers). Hope I remember correctly.

Was in Egypt this past November and tried all the beers offered. All were light, very cold and very good. However, it being a Muslim country, be careful about ordering a 'beer', since you may get a non-alcoholic one. Several of my group had this happen the first time we ordered, and were sure to order a specific brand thereafter.

Beers are good and European (stronger) in their taste and alcohol content. Ask for the brand rather than just a beer.

Thanks! I'll be sure to ask for a brand, probably Stella as I'm not sure how to pronounce Saqqara (sah-car-a maybe?) This will be fun...

both are lagers - I preferred Stella. A tad better than Bud, but not much (I drink Yuegling, DH dark beers and ales).

I believe that Saqqara comes in two proofs. The stronger one (greater alc. content) also comes in a king size bottle. Fantastic, and one will put you away.

Saqqara 7-star is the high alcohol one.

You may also be able to find Heineken and Carlsburg pretty frequently.

I absolutely LOVED Stella. Light and crisp. It's become a hobby of mine to find it in the U.S., but in almost 4 years I have yet to.

Great answers! I have an idea now what these two beers are like and that there are some other choices as well. I'm ready for some hot weather and some cold beer!

As Marlon Brando once said,

STELLA!!!!

Of course he was referring to that great Egyptian beer.

Seriously, Stella is some good stuff. ;-)

Anybody read the war novel or seen the film, "Ice Cold in Alex" ? Any civilised beer drinker would appreciate the title. But the Hollywood movie distributors forced the producers to change it for the American market to 'Desert Attack'. They've got about as much imagination as a dead sloth. I've been off Hollywood ever since.
